Mechanical & Electrical Engineer

Experiened M&E Engineer required for contract role within local authority based in South London.

You will be required to undertake a personal case-load of Building Regulations submissions, including the site inspection and examination of compliance with relevant building control legislation, including the Building Act (specifically relating to means of escape, electrical and mechanical issues) and Regulations, and the London Building Acts. This will include: 

• Examination of plans and associated details
• Inspection and testing of work on site
• Enforcement, action including attendance at Court
• Preparation of letter and reports

Duties will also include:
  • To ensure that applicants are aware of any statutory requirements affecting their proposals. 
  • To advise Building Control Officers, builders, architects and other clients on mechanical and electrical design of complex projects in relation to relevant legislation. 
  • To appraise and check fire safety provisions and means of escape to ensure the application of appropriate standards and/or codes of practice. Ensure that statutory consultation with external agencies is carried out as necessary.
  • To appraise dangerous structures and advise on appropriate remedial action.  
Previous experience required:
Experience in a relevant building, construction or engineering environment.  Experience of examining plans for compliance with building regulations.  
Detailed knowledge of all of the following areas:
• Fire alarm and detection
• Fire suppression (sprinkler and gaseous)
• Fire fighting installations ( dry and wet risers)
• Smoke dispersal, control and removal 
• Pressurization of fire fighting shafts
• Fire service access into and through the building
• Emergency and standby electrical supplies
• Fire safety and means of escape in buildings, including appropriate standards and codes of practice. 
• Supervision of building work on site
• Dangerous structures, including appropriate remedial action to make safe.

Qualifications:
  • Degree or HNC in building, building surveying, Mechanical and electrical engineering and relevant post qualification experience, or able to demonstrate a comparable level of knowledge and skills obtained through relevant experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the main legislation including the London Building Acts, Building Act 1984 and the Building Regulations
