Role Description

Senior Building Control Surveyor required for an immediate start working within the busy Building Services and Maintenance department of a local authority in North London.

Job Specification:

To be a member of a team providing a range of professional and technical skills to discharge the Council’s delegated powers and duties as required under the Building Regulations, Building Act and associated legislation. Assist in the provision of service for the diverse range of activities outlined below:-

1.Ensure that all works controlled under the Building Regulations and associated legislation are undertaken in such a manner as to comply with substantive provisions

2.Provide professional advice and guidance to all users of the service and recommend innovative and practical options to complex Building Regulation queries.

3.Prime responsibility to ensure unauthorised work is brought into compliance and lead on any necessary enforcement action under the Building Regulations and Building Act.

4.Prime responsibility for taking decisions on all aspects of Dangerous Structures and responding within 2-hour target time. When necessary to work inaccordance with the emergency plan and liaise with other departments of the Council and outside bodies to achieve removal of the dangerous structure. Complete reports and arrange serving of any required notice.

5.The carrying out of all duties with due regard to the competitive nature of Building Control work and the need to provide a proper level of service, as staffing and financial constraints will allow

6.Contribute to the marketing and promotion of the Building Control Serviice so as to minimise the loss of work to Approved Inspectors in the private sector.

7.The undertaking of Principal Building Surveyor Daily duties in their absence to ensure the efficient running of the section.

8.Participate in the out of hours emergency dangerous structure callout rota.


Qualifications & experience required for the role:

  • Full member of a professional body – RICS ABE CIOB
  • Professionally qualified with substantial experience in BC and proven ability in the complete range of BC activities and experience of securing work for BC
  • Good communication and office skills – written/verbal/IT
  • Team worker who is self motivated, organised, methodical, flexible and works under pressure to meet targets
  • Knowledge in the use of IDOX software (desirable)
  • Experience of quality assurance (desirable)
  • Full UK driving licence & daily use of a vehicle for site visits is essential. 


Start date:  ASAP

Location: North London/Middx

Rate: Up to £40 p/h Ltd(umbrella) company

Contract duration: Initial 2-3 month contract to be renewed depending upon candidate and workload.
