Structural Design Engineer required for ongoing contract position with offshore oil & gas contractors based in Aberdeen.
To perform tasks assigned by the Project Structural Lead, related with design, verification or study activities. Interface with other project Specialists and Designers. Co-ordinate technical activities performed inside or outside the Company.
Main responsibilities: • Be conversant with the technical design and analysis within their specialist discipline, both at a conceptual ad detailed design level. Have good working knowledge of appropriate industry design standards. • To technically evaluate the method of carrying out offshore construction, primarily in support of the procedure as proposed by the project, but also being able to assist in developing/modifying such a procedure. Such evaluation should include analytical and numerical analysis, including appropriate use of engineering software. • Be able to document their design/analysis in the form of written reports and be able to present their findings in concisely in meetings. Should be able to efficiently communicate their design concept to Draughting and other personnel so as to optimise the design and manufacture process. • To ensure the correct material is used for the appropriate application. • Be familiar with Technical and Operations Department specifications, design, drawing procedures in order to ensure their design’s meet required governmental and/or statutory bodies legislation, design standards specified by the Client and project and conforms to the Company’s Integrated Management System (IMS). • Be conversant with and use the engineering change notice (ECN) process to ensure changes to design, post issue for implementation, are effectively communicated to projects and other affected parties. • To become familiar with Vessel and ROV operations / limitations, in order to improve design, operational schedule, procedures and safety. • Make develop and encourage any technical suggestions that will enhance the overall engineering or operational efficiency. • Interface with the other engineers to guarantee all design work is carried out with the common target of optimising final cost and schedule. • Liaise with and co-ordinate the activities of vendors and subcontractors as and when required as a part of the engineering process, without commercial authority. This may include technical evaluation of bids, answering technical queries by the manufacturer, attending meetings with the manufacturer to advise on technical issues. This role will be carried out in co-operation with the specific project managers/personnel and not in isolation. • To assist Project Engineers with preparation of offshore operations installation manuals including the initiation and maintaining of drawings and calculations for inclusion in procedures / manuals. • Be able to assist with supervision of installation of equipment aboard Company vessels when within harbour, or other onshore Company facility. Where appropriate survival and medical certification is held, may be requested to carry out similar tasks aboard vessels at sea and onboard offshore installations. • May be required to witness and co-ordinate assembly, testing, commissioning and operation at onshore locations and to assist with inspection of incoming items as appropriate to knowledge, experience and training. • Assist Project Engineers with the design or equipment to assist with vessel mobilisation / demobilisation of project equipment. • Conduct all activities within the IMS Policy, Procedures and Work Instruction or any successor to this which may be implemented by the Company. • Keep up to date with appropriate industry design standards and ongoing developments in the field of Subsea Construction and Remote Systems Engineering.
The degree to which the individual will be expected to fulfil the above duties will be consistent with their seniority and level of experience.
Qualifications & Experience: • University or College Engineering education to BSc/BEng or higher and/or appropriate industry training in Engineering. • Chartered Member of an Engineering Institution or seeking to obtain this. • Appropriate professional experience, the length of which commensurate with the grade of employment. Appropriate experience will be in either subsea design / construction or heavy industrial design / construction engineering. Appropriate analytical experience alone in an engineering discipline will be appropriate for some positions. • Be conversant with the requirements of ISO 9001 Quality Standard
